What Happens at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment?

Your initial appointment will be 60-minutes, with your physiotherapist who is dedicated exclusively to one-on-one treatment time with you in our private and spacious treatment rooms, or one of our curtained tables – please advise our booking department if you are absolutely set on a private room for your first appointment.

We will ask a lot of questions about your injury—the information you tell us plays a big part in making an accurate diagnosis. Then we’ll do some clinical and “hands-on” assessment to confirm the diagnosis.

We will take time and care at the end of the appointment to explain your problem and a treatment plan—in the language you can understand—including why you, why now and, most importantly, what to do about it.

You may receive some hands-on treatment during the first visit depending on your injury. We will go over your plan for the on-going management of your injury, including a time frame for your recovery, plans for further visits if they are required, and the exercises you need to do at home. We will focus on the two or three things you should do at home so you’re not burdened with too much to do. Your customized home-management program will be available to you via email or paper copy, a copy of which will be saved to your personal medical record.

What Treatments do Physiotherapists Use?

Physiotherapists use a wide range of treatments within the clinical setting. Most commonly at our clinic you will see the use of hot and cold packs, ultrasound, shockwave, dry needling, IFC, joint mobilization and manipulation and personalized exercise programs.

What to Wear to a Physiotherapy Appointment?

Wear appropriate clothing to expose the area requiring treatment. We can lend you shorts, t-shirts, or an examination gown if you need them.

What to Bring to a Physiotherapy Appointment?

Please bring all relevant imaging pertaining to your injury (x-ray, CT, MRI, etc). If you have a referral letter from a doctor bring that, too. Also, bring your health plan policy information, if you are a member of one.

Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral to see a Physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists are primary healthcare providers, meaning that no doctor’s referral is required for treatment. However, if treatment is being covered by an insurance company, they may require a referral from a doctor before reimbursement (most insurance providers do not require a referral).

What About Return Appointments?

Subsequent treatments last 30- to 45-minutes (sometimes longer) and always provide you with exclusive one-on-one time with your therapist.

What About Payment?

Payment is required at the time of your appointment. Individuals who do not have third party coverage or whose insurance has run out pay for the service themselves. It is important to discuss payment requirements with your physiotherapist.
Private insurance coverage varies depending on your workplace plan. Employee Health care benefit plans may also provide coverage for physiotherapy services. Certain private health insurance plans allow direct payment from the insurer and can be processed, where applicable, at the time of your appointment provided you have brought along your appropriate health plan policy information.

Will MPI or WCB Cover my Physiotherapy Treatment?

Manitoba Public Insurance and Workers Compensation Board will pay for physiotherapy rehabilitation services related to motor vehicle and workplace-related injuries respectively. For coverage details, please contact Manitoba Public Insurance or the Workers’ Compensation Board.
